End of Semester

Well, the end of the semester is quickly approaching. Students will be taking final exams on Thursday 12/15 & Friday 12/16. Christmas vacation will be from 12/19/2011 - 1/02/2012.

Currently we are studying cellular processes, with an emphasis on Homeostasis. Homeostasis is derived from the Greek words homeo, meaning "same", and stasis, meaning "stable". This cellular process involves a multitude of organelles (organs inside the cell) that work to help the cell maintain a stable environment.

The specific process that we are studying is Diffusion. Diffusion is the movement of particels from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. The diffusion of water is called Osmosis. Your student has been conducting a lab experiment that measures the effect of salt concentrations in different solutions.

Resources

Dear Parents and Students,
Here are a few helpful resources that you can have fun with while learning more about biology:

1. http://sciencecastle.com/sc/index.php/home/index - Be sure to register with this website. It provides great activities to learn more about any aspect of biology.

2. http://www.can-do.com/science/biology.html - This site is very simple to navigate and provides great tools to help understand a topic a little bit better.

3. http://www.biology-online.org/dictionary/Main_Page - For those hard to understand terms.

I hope you find these useful. Enjoy!
Mr. Reynolds

Welcome

Hello Students & Parents -

Here is a quick message to say that this semester has certainly flown by! Next week is the Thanksgiving Break and your student(s) will be out of school from Wednesday 11/23 - Friday 11/25. They will return to school on Monday 11/28.

We have been working hard on understanding the two types of cells; Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic. Do you know what kind of cells you are made of? That's right, EUKARYOTIC! One of the differences between Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic cells is that Eukaryotic cells contain a nucleus which holds our DNA.

Your student(s) have been taking a Benchmark Assessment the last two days in Biology STAAR. The Benchmark is a tool that helps the student to measure their progress in all the topics we have been studying so far this school year.

If at anytime you have a question or comment, please feel free to contact me: robert.reynolds@plainview.k12.tx.us

Happy Thanksgiving!!!
